Job Description

Driftwood Communications has an exciting opportunity for OSP Linemen Technicians.

As a Full-time OSP Linemen Technician, you would be joining a team of dedicated, diversified and energetic people all committed to meeting deadlines for our clients while upholding the most stringent safety standards within the industry. The successful candidate will be working with both copper and fiber in aerial and underground locations in all-weather environments.

The position of Telecom OSP Lineman requires the candidate to operate various lift vehicles and equipment including Telsta’s, cable lashing machines, confined spaces devices, pumps and blowers. The lineman is also required to perform tasks that include daily truck inspections, on-site toolbox meetings and all other industry and company safety practices. Driftwood is a safety-first company and expect all employees to adhere to all safety standards and protocols.

Requirements:

  • Must have a safe driving record and provide a recent driver abstract
  • Must have a valid class 5 license with air
  • Successful candidate will be required to pass a criminal record check
  • Strong focus on safety in all environments
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions including confined spaces and working in isolation
  • Able to work in a physically demanding atmosphere, lifting over 70 lbs., climb ladders, handling of cable reels and other related tasks.
  • Being self-disciplined and organized
  • Customer focused character, with a commitment to quality workmanship
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Being physically fit to work in any environment, including confined spaces
  • Skilled in interpreting and implementing engineered design maps and records
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends or on emergency call outs as required
  • Travel is required for this position
  • Skilled at climbing poles

Assets:

  • Experience with both pole and conduit placement, trenching and UG box installing
  • Flexibility to travel within BC
  • Experience with Micro cells
  • Comfortable using Computer and hand-held devices would be an asset

Are you an experienced Telecom Drop Technician?

We are seeking a committed, customer service oriented technician for the position of Telecom Drop Installer. The ideal candidate is looking for a long-term career and is ready to apply their positive attitude and outstanding customer service approach as a Security Technician with Driftwood Communications.

Under the direction and supervision, the drop installer will be trained and responsible for installing both aerial and underground fibre and copper drops to customers homes while delivering exceptional customer service going above and beyond on every call.

The Telecom Drop Installer works outdoors in all weather conditions with minimal supervision, often performing tasks in confined spaces and up on ladders; experience and knowledge in these areas is an asset. There are occasions where the Telecom Drop Tech is required to dig a trench to place or repair drop conduit.

Job Summary:

  • Provide exceptional customer experience in all inter-actions, in a polite professional courteous manner
  • Driving with care and attention and following all posted signage enroute to complete calls
  • Provide an overview for the customer if available before proceeding to complete installation, for aerial and underground drop work. Always completing at the highest level of craftsmanship.
  • Working in a variety of weather conditions, you will fully document work with the support of photos and related forms.
  • Handling with care and being accountable to maintain all company tools, equipment and vehicles, including the customers residents’ premises
  • Having an ability to overview each project and making sound solid decisions for idea routing of drops, at times, possibly diagnose & troubleshoot problems
  • Having flexibility to work later than scheduled complete work orders that are in high demand for completion.
  • Safety Conscious and able to adhere to an intensely structured safety program

Skill Required: 

  • Experience operating everyday hand tools safely and confidently
  • Maintain a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and provision of a clean driver’s abstract (within the last 6 months)
  • Physically fit enough to lift and carry 70lbs
  • Can perform duties in many challenging environments including outdoors, from heights and in confined spaces
  • Prior experience in telecommunications industry working for Telus and or Shaw is an asset
  • A strong technical aptitude and general interest in the field; must enjoy working with technology
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Self-organized with the ability to prioritize and balance workloads without oversight

Are you an experienced OSP Fiber Splicer looking for an exciting opportunity to grow your career? The telecommunications industry is a constantly changing and growing field with so many career opportunities within it. Driftwood Communications is seeking a committed, service-oriented individual to join our Vancouver Island Team. The successful candidate will be working primarily with fibre and all associated termination hardware. 

Job Summary: 

The successful candidate will be working primarily fibre and all associated termination hardware. This includes being competent with all splicing activities as well as troubleshooting, termination, testing, documentation, and related activities, and must be familiar with FOSC’s, Mid-stripping, and FEP installations.

  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license and provide a recent driver abstract 
  • Being able to read and understand design maps and splice documents 
  • Successful candidate will be required to pass a criminal record check 
  • Attention to detail with a commitment to safety while working in all environments
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, in a team environment as well as independent
  • Able to work in a physically demanding atmosphere, lifting over 75 lbs., climb ladders, handling pumps and blowers, entering confined spaces and other related tasks 
  • Must be competent with all splicing activities as well as troubleshooting, termination, testing,  documentation, and related activities, and must be familiar with FOSC’s, Mid-stripping, and FEP installations. 
  • Being self-disciplined and organized with excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Customer focused individual with a commitment to quality workmanship and craft 
  • Skilled in interpreting and implementing engineered design maps and records 
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends or on emergency call outs as required 
  • Having Aerial Lift, Confined Spaces, First Aid, Ground Distance, Fall Arrest, Ladder Safety & Handling, Hydro Awareness/ 7 Steps to Safety are all assets 
  • Willingness to support after hours and emergency call outs 
  • Being Shaw and/or Telus certified is an asset Responsibilities: 
  • Fully accountable for all project work including the completion documentation 
  • Having the ability to troubleshoot active networks is essential
  • Able to work in a team as well as independently 
  • Ability to coach, train and mentor others in the fibre craft 
  • Experienced in leading a team working together to meet project due dates
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in the placing / lashing of various materials 
  • Skilled with PIC color coded and count identification 
  • Knowledge of the TELUS TOPPS documentation is an asset 
  • Must be prepared to work in all weather conditions and confined spaces, with the flexibility to travel to various areas within BC 
  • Must adhere to all safety practices including daily truck inspections, on site toolbox meetings and all other industry and company safety practices. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in splicing, activating, and testing various types of fibre 
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Experience in working with pressure testing 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Understanding knowledge of the TOPPS standards for copper and fibre expectations
  • Having experience in copper splicing is an asset.
